Food System Resilience during COVID and Beyond with Dr. Scott McClure

Join Dr. Scott McClure in the first presentation of our Summer Lecture Series. Dr. Scott McClure was born in Winchester before growing up in Northern Virginia. After receiving Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Food Science from Cornell University he spent over five years in the food industry developing granola bars and flavored almonds. After that he pivoted into Public Health earning a PhD in Epidemiology from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health as well as a Graduate Certificate in the Food System Environment and Public Health. Since 2019 he has been serving as an Assistant Professor of Public Health at Shenandoah University where he teaches a variety of courses including Human Nutrition Food Systems and Community Nutrition. His research currently focuses on helping the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to better understand the needs of those experiencing food insecurity in our area.

Join Dr. Scott King in the second presentation of our Summer Lecture Series. Scott P. King is a Professor of Psychology at Shenandoah University where he has worked since 2010. At SU he teaches courses in social psychology, personality psychology, research methods, aging and adult development, and interpersonal relationships. Dr. King’s research specialties include generational dynamics, reducing ageism across generations, service-learning pedagogy, and the intersection of social media and personality. He holds a B.A. in Psychology and German from Beloit College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Loyola University Chicago which is where he first came across Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt the focus of this talk.

Join Dr. Copenhaver in the third presentation of our Summer Lecture Series. Dr. Copenhaver is Professor Emeritus of Religion and Philosophy at Shenandoah University. He attended college at Washington and Lee University majoring in European History. Following college he attended Fuller Theological Seminary before being ordained in the United Methodist Church in 1977. He earned the Ph.D. in religion and culture at The Catholic University of America. Following campus ministry at James Madison University he came to Shenandoah University in 1987 as chaplain and assistant professor of religion. He taught for twenty-seven years at the University and served as Chair of the Department of Religion for eighteen years. While teaching he served on the National Council of the Fellowship of Reconciliation the oldest and largest interfaith peacemaking organization and the National Board of Theta Alpha Kappa the national honor society for religious studies and theology. He is the author of Prayerful Responsibility. Since his retirement in 2014 he has been working for a more just and compassionate commonwealth through the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy (VICPP).

"Still Marching On": The Shenandoah Valley's African Americans in the Civil War's Aftermath with Prof Jonathan Noyalas

Join us for the final presentation of our Summer Lecture Series with Professor Jonathan Noyalas. Prof. Noyalas is director of Shenandoah University’s McCormick Civil War Institute and a professor in the history department at Shenandoah University. Noyalas is the founding editor of Journal of the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War Era, the author or editor of 15 books, and has published more than 100 essays, articles, chapters, and reviews in a variety of scholarly and popular publications, including Civil War Times, America’s Civil War, Civil War History, North & South, and Blue & Gray. Noyalas has consulted on a variety of public history projects with groups such as the National Park Service, National Geographic, American Battlefield Trust, and the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District. He has appeared on C-SPAN’s American History, TV PCN, and NPR’s “With Good Reason.” Prof. Noyalas is the recipient of numerous awards for his teaching and scholarship including Shenandoah University’s Exemplary Teaching Award for the first year seminar and Shenandoah’s Wilkins Award. In 2016 he received the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia’s Outstanding Faculty Award–the highest honor that can be bestowed upon someone in higher education in Virginia.
